I start by understanding your business - really digging in.
Who is your customer at a general level - what are their goals? This is also a great point to do some journey mapping if you haven’t already (a service I offer). This allows us to really think like the customer at each point in their relationship with you as a brand.
I also like to understand the inner workings of the team - What systems and tools are in place? How organized is the marketing in it’s current state? What is the background and knowledge of the people I will be working closest with? How does the marketing arm work with others in the business? What do you see as your biggest challenges, gaps in information or execution, and what do you do really well?
What are the top priorities at the business - what are your KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), have they been defined and agreed upon? What are the top metrics for marketing programs and what drives the business? If you haven’t defined them or figured out a good way to monitor them this is another service I offer. Which activities are critical to the success and which are tangential, and why are you doing them?
Depending on the capacity in which you hire me - on a project basis or on retainer the methodology from there can be as unique as you are. Each business has unique goals, unique complexities, and unique strengths.
If you have a specific project in mind, we can start to outline your project brief together - don’t worry I have a template - 3 pretty simple basic questions - the what, why, and when. Then if you can answer right away there are 6 more questions that go into more detail - these will also be addressed and clarified in the Discovery phase, so no need to have all of the answers up front. As we review your project brief together I will be able to tell you whether a basic or deep discovery will be needed.
Also in the discovery phase, we will make sure I have the access to systems, resources, and information needed to complete the project. This type of information will help in being able to proceed with a specific project proposal and SOW with expected deliverables, cost, and methods.
Throughout a project, I will rely on you for feedback. This is your story, your business we will build from the ground up, around your unique story. When I’m thinking like an employee in your company, I’m serving your needs far better. I can understand your business like it’s my own and then I will tell you which options are available and which to steer clear of, then we can make a decision together about which of those options will help you most achieve your goals.
